Ziel plays with shapes, spaces and light, plays with technology and nature. It plays with limits. It will be located opposite the Villa Biarritz Park and proposes a visual continuity with the surroundings.
A unique residential building that responds to exceptional conditions. It offers bright and spacious environments, taking advantage of natural light; interiors and exteriors with excellent views and orientations.
Natural ventilation, its large collective green terraces and the idea of capturing the connection with the Villa Biarritz Park. Its innovative objective is to continue Villa Biarriz Park, the soul of the neighborhood, inside.
It will transform the corner of Benito Blanco and Vázquez Ledesma, it will have 14 floors and will have a disruptive imprint, to create a unique and different experience in Montevideo.
An experience between the natural and the urban, the generosity of La Rambla, the generic and the specific of its architecture and the importance of the park as a natural, sustainable, renewing, social lung.
INTRODUCTION
The design begins with an understanding of the city of Montevideo, the Punta Carretas neighborhood and the cultural aspects of Uruguay. To achieve this, it was very important to have worked collaboratively between the offices of MVRDV, IXOU, MPR and MONOBLOCK. This helped us to gain a deeper and greater understanding of the place where we work, allowing us to bring new and innovative solutions, but always responding to local problems.
One of the first things to note about Montevideo is the contrasts and contradictions that one can find throughout the city. Montevideo's topography is very natural, but also urban; Montevideo's public spaces are dense, but also generous; and the residential architecture of Montevideo is specific, with a lot of character, but also generic.
LOCATION
Looking closely at our location, we can discover the beautiful Villa Biarritz park, a park that functions as a green heart for the neighborhood, irrigating life, health, vegetation and movement for the entire neighborhood.
The weekly fair brings together people from all over the city inviting them to socialize and discover the park.
The land is located at the intersection of “Luis Vázquez Ledesma” and “Juan Benito Blanco” streets, one of the last available plots that directly looks out onto Villa Biarritz park. Its corner quality makes it a notable point within the city, since it is highly visible from many points of view.
This place is highly observable from the Rambla since it has a direct view towards it, but also given the reason that it is located in front of a large open space, this land is one of the few points in the city where one can step away and see it from 15m-30m away.
CONCEPT
The Project proposes a large central patio that functions as the soul of the building. Through this patio, light, air and vegetation are introduced to all corners of the building, creating a comfortable and mainly healthy environment for those who live there.
Four parks are proposed on levels 2, 4, 6 and 8 connected to the central patio to further increase lighting, air and vegetation inside the building. This benefits the units on lower levels as it creates a new source of direct light, and creates the possibility of common spaces where neighbors can gather, strengthening a sense of community.
Sustainability has been another very important point for this design. The project generates many active and passive solutions to improve the building's performance.
There is a large production of solar energy through the party walls and the roof of the building, the units can naturally ventilate through the courtyard and the parks at height, the shape of the building generates shade naturally in summer, and the integration of vegetation filters the air and lowers the temperature on the hottest days.
The ground floor is a clear continuation of the Villa Biarritz park and is where two public spaces will also be found, one intended to be a restaurant and another a multipurpose commercial space on Vázquez Ledesma street.
In conclusion, the building creates a series of urban qualities that help improve the Villa Biarritz neighborhood.
It is a porous building that improves the quality of light and air in the units. The pedestrian can experience the depth of the building, being able to look inside. The elevated parks allow the possibility of creating a sense of community within the building and become something that neighbors can access.
On the roof we can find a green crown that stands out from the rest of the water tanks of the neighbouring buildings. The building creates a direct connection with the park, making it visible even from the Rambla.
And finally, it reacts to its corner condition, creating an iconic and special solution at the intersection that respects and adapts to the architecture of the neighbours.
